Initially, this meant just four composers, Pierre Boulez , Bruno Maderna , Luigi Nono , and Karlheinz Stockhausen , but others came to be added, in various ways. The term does not refer to an educational institution. Thanks to these courses, Darmstadt is now a major centre of modern music, particularly for German composers. Two years later the Darmstadt School effectively dissolved due to musical differences, expressed once again by Nono in his Darmstadt lecture "Text—Musik—Gesang" Fox , Nevertheless, composers active at Darmstadt in the early s under Steinecke's successor Ernst Thomas are sometimes included by extension— Helmut Lachenmann , for example Schleiermacher , 23—24 —and although he was only at Darmstadt before , Olivier Messiaen is also sometimes included because of the influence his music had on the later Darmstadt composers Schleiermacher , However, according to one source, although Messiaen paid "a brief visit" to the courses in , "he neither taught students nor lectured" there Iddon , Many distinguished lecturers appeared at Darmstadt.

The 50th edition of the Darmstadt Summer Course was initially planned to take place from 18th of July to 1st of August this year. Besides its unique combination of summer academy and international music festival, the Darmstadt Summer Course gains a great part of its significance and attractiveness through being an international meeting point and through creating temporary communities of participants, tutors, guest artists and visitors over two weeks. The artistic program with over 60 public concerts and an extensive academy program was supposed to be presented at the end of April. The worldwide effects of the COVID pandemic make it impossible to present a festival with international participants in a responsible way. For this reason, IMD had to decide — after having talked to funding organizations and artists — to realize the program one year later. The 50th Darmstadt Summer Course are now planned to be held — 75 years after their first edition in — from 31 July to 14 August The participation fee will be refunded to enrolled participants. They will be given priority during the enrollment.
Although Boulez cast them all as hypotheticals, some of the new extensions of serialism he was proposing had already been put into practice by , both by Boulez himself and by some of the other musicians who had been meeting every summer at a unique institution that had been set up in in Darmstadt, a town located in the state of Hessen in central Germany, which is to say in the American zone of occupation. The first of these aims was mainly that of the American backers. The Summer Courses, in their earliest phase, have been compared with the Congress for Cultural Freedom, an anti-Communist organization headed by the composer Nicolas Nabokov, which was secretly funded by the United States government's Central Intelligence Agency as an instrument of American foreign policy. The second aim, more insularly professional, was primarily that of the Germans. Lectures by American musicians were frequent, as were those by Germans who had fled to America such as Leo Schrade, a famous musicologist who, though primarily a medievalist, spoke at Darmstadt about Charles Ives, and Stefan Wolpe, whose leftist commitments had been muted in the wake of the Zhdanovshchina. The performance of two works is supported by the EvS Music Foundation: Atlas of the Sky , by Australian composer Liza Lim is being created for the Australian ensemble Speak Percussion performing in Darmstadt for the first time , the vocal performer Jessica Aszodi and an amateur choir. Together with the choreographer Lucy Guerin and instrument builder Adam Stewart Lim focalizes collective processes: What power and responsibility does the individual musician have in terms of the joint aesthetic experience? With his new work for the Darmstadt summer courses entitled Ouranos Italian composer Pierluigi Billone not only makes reference to the star system but also Greek mythology. Uranus — the heavens personified — is a figure that allows multifaceted associations. For some time now Billone has been interested in the role of the voice s in an instrumental context and the importance of singing as a vocal act. The two singers Anna Clare Hauf and Ursula Langmayr and Ensemble Nikel, extended for the first time to six musicians in Darmstadt, all mean a body of musicians are available whose soloist creativity allows composer Billone to reach a level of awe-inspiring intensity for which his music has become known.
